Mayank Agarwal hit an unbeaten 156 as India opened up a crucial first-innings lead over Bangladesh on the second day of their opening Test on Friday.

India were 303 for three at tea — 153 runs ahead — with Agarwal and Ajinkya Rahane, on 82, putting on 184 runs for the fourth wicket in Indore.

Agarwal, starting the day on 37, completed his third Test century to ease Indian nerves after skipper Virat Kohli was out for a duck — his 10th in 83 Tests — in the first session.

Abu Jayed, who sent opener Rohit Sharma packing for six on Thursday, claimed both wickets Friday with some disciplined pace bowling.

He got Cheteshwar Pujara (54) caught at gully soon after the overnight batsman completed his 23rd Test fifty with a boundary.

But it was Kohli’s wicket that brought joy to Bangladesh after they successfully reviewed an lbw decision. Replays indicated the ball would have hit leg stump.

Agarwal stood firm with Rahane and went on the attack. His innings included three sixes and 21 fours. A physio went on the field several times in the afternoon session to stretch his leg.

Rahane reached his 21st Test fifty and seemed happy to play second fiddle to his in-form partner Agarwal, who averages over 55 in eight Tests.

India’s pace bowlers, led by Mohammed Shami who took three wickets, bundled Bangladesh for 150 on the opening day after the tourists decided to bat first on a green wicket.
